Communities In Schools (CIS)
Communities In Schools Houston (CIS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1979 to provide student support services to at-risk youth. With programs in over 100 schools in the Houston, Spring Branch, Alief, Aldine and Fort Bend school districts, CIS is able to touch the lives of over 45,000 students and their families annually.
Opportunity Specifics:
Interns will be working on a middle school or high school campus. The interns’ direct supervisor will be the CIS project manager or CIS case manager that is assigned to that campus. Interns will be given the opportunity to sign up as a math or science tutor that is assigned to an individual student and/or a group of students who are at risk and experience a need for enrichment in one or both areas. Interns will also be allowed to sign up as a math or science club leader. Interns will be expected to create a club that focuses on math or science. The club will make learning fun and will allow the students to understand math and science in the real world. Most clubs will be held after school, but some campuses may allow them during the school day. Depending upon the school and the needs, individual and/or groups may change throughout the semester. Interns are allowed to work at more than one school. Tutoring hours are flexible and depends upon the availability of the intern.
