Houston Museum of Natural Science
The mission of the Houston Museum of Natural Science shall be to preserve and advance the general knowledge of natural science; to enhance in individuals the knowledge of and delight in natural science and related subjects; and to maintain and promote a museum of the first class. The Museum is a major science learning center with over a half million school children visiting annually, including every fourth grade and seventh grade class in the Houston Independent School District. Therefore there are many opportunities for volunteers to interact with students.
Location: One Herman Circle Dr, Houston, TX 77030; about 5 miles from UH main campus.
Opportunities Specifics: Interested interns will be volunteering at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. All interns are required to go through a background check and train for the position desired. Training days may be scheduled individually, although there are training days set by HMNS. Hours are flexible and depend on the position desired. There are afterschool and weekend hours available, as well as special event overnights.
- Floor Presenter- Interns will make a small presentation at various posts around the museum. Each post will cover a different topic related to the exhibits nearby.
- HISD 4th Grades + Teacher- Interns will help guide fourth graders through the museum, often taking over for the teachers by explaining displays or activities. All of HISD’s fourth graders will attend the museum in a year, so there are many opportunities for internships.
- Docent presenter/ Leader – A docent is a knowledgeable staff person who acts as a guide for museum visitors. It is like a step up from a floor presenter.
- Weekends and Overnights – There are several internship opportunities for special events that should be set up on a case by case basis.
