Project GRAD

Project GRAD
Today, Project GRAD Houston (Graduation Really Achieves Dreams) is at work in five feeder patterns of Houston ISD, serving 66 schools and approximately 44,000 children with a comprehensive PK-16 college access and success program. Working in tandem with school and community leaders, the GRAD model is a value-added system of curricular, methodological, and student and family support programs that builds academic skills, improves student behavior, addresses family needs, and sets children on the road to college.

Locations:

  • Davis HS (Houston ISD) - About 8 miles from UH
  • Sam Houston HS (Houston ISD) – About 12 miles from UH
  • Wheatley HS (Houston ISD) – About 7 miles from UH
  • Reagan HS (Houston ISD) – About 9 miles from UH
  • Yates HS (Houston ISD) – About 2 miles from UH
  • 11 Middle Schools (Houston ISD) – Middle schools are for tutoring only

Opportunity Specifics:
Project GRAD offers a program called GRAD College Institute. For this opportunity, all high school students, who are interested in participating, will be transported to the University of Houston by bus.  Interns will be given the opportunity to prepare and teach math or science enrichment lessons that will help the students become more successful academically.  The classes will be no more than 20-25 students per session, and sessions will last for no more than one hour.  If enough interns sign up for this opportunity, several sessions around the campus will be going on at the same time, and the high school students will rotate from one session to another.  The days and times of the institutes are dependent upon the availability of the intern.  Saturdays are an option.

For GRAD Tutoring opportunities, interns may be asked to create enrichment lessons in the area of mathematics as well as assist classroom teachers with lessons that have already been created. Interns will work with individual students or small groups. Depending upon the school and the need, individual students and/or groups may change throughout the semester.  All students will either be high school freshmen or middle school students.  Interns will have the opportunity to choose high school or middle school for tutoring positions. Interns are allowed to work at more than one school.  Tutoring hours are flexible and are based upon the availability of the intern.

Opportunities:

GRAD College Institutes (Length of program varies based on availability of intern)
Provide students with a real, extended university experience. College Institutes are designed to reduce at-risk students’ uneasiness and anxieties about high school and college, as well as to improve their critical thinking and knowledge base in mathematics, literacy, and science. College Institutes serve to meet GRAD students’ needs for academic reinforcement and increased awareness of the post secondary possibilities by:

  • Acclimating students, many of whom will be the first in their family to attend college, to life in a university setting.
  • Preparing students for the coming school year through coursework in key subjects such as mathematics, science, and English, and enhance their leadership skills.
  • Familiarizing students with career pathways, making the link between courses of study, college degrees, and career possibilities.

The Institutes help students see themselves as potential college students and motivate students to complete high school because they have been exposed to college courses and are better prepared to succeed in their high school classes.

GRAD Tutors
Provide individual or small group tutoring sessions to high school freshman or middle school students who are in need of math enrichment activities. Interns will be allowed to create math lessons and will also be asked to help classroom teachers with lessons that have already been created.
